Falmouth is the sailing capital of Cornwall and reputed to be the world’s third largest natural harbour.
Warmed by the Gulf Stream and famous for its beaches, National Maritime Museum and castle, the town has a rich history from Smugglers and Pirates in the 17th Century to the home of the Packet Ship service which sailed to the Mediterranean and the Americas carrying mail and goods – many of the large houses nestled on the hillside were built for the captains of these ships.
Now the town is a haven for boats of all type and size, the bustling port has a wide range of independent shops, stunning fish restaurants (Rick Stein recently added to this with his Fish & Chip Restaurant & Oyster Bar) and art galleries.
For those that enjoy spending time on the water Falmouth offers a wide variety of activities. Visitors can travel on one of the many Fal River Ferries travelling to Flushing, St Mawes or the Helford River, hire a boat or canoe, or join one of the boats for fishing or scuba diving.
Pendennis Castle was built in the 16th Century and sits high above the harbour with truly magical panoramic views across the bay and is a popular attraction while The National Maritime museum and Ships and Castles swimming pool and water centre offer fun days out whatever the weather.
The regions subtropical climate led to the establishment of many lush and exotic gardens, packed with magnolias, tree ferns, rhododendrons and palms. Trelissick, Glendurgan and Trebah are all within easy reach.
Falmouth has four family friendly beaches Gyllyngvase, Castle, Swanpool and Maenporth all of which provide a clean and safe environment in which to relax and swim and, of course, build sandcastles.
The town has many annual events including Falmouth week – 7 days of sailing with fireworks and aerobatic displays, The Fal River, Sea Shanty and Oyster festivals.
Surrounded by an area of Outstanding Natural beauty, Falmouth is popular with walkers, cyclists and families, and is also perfectly placed to explore all that Cornwall has to offer. The Eden Project and the rugged beaches of the North Coast are just a 40 minutes’ drive away.
