Description

Captain Upton’s has got to be up there with one of the best-refurbished cottages in Falmouth. Set over three floors, this beautiful holiday home offers guests the perfect retreat from their busy, chaotic lives and is stooped in character and history. Believed to have been built by Captain Upton in 1708, this charming cottage is part of a row of buildings, tucked away in a peaceful courtyard and with rooftop views over Falmouth Harbour.

Stepping into the cottage, guests are greeted by the warm and welcoming kitchen. This space has been thoughtfully refurbished with solid oak floors and units. The overall feel of this room a light and bright space that harbours hints of the original character of the cottage. The dark wooden units are a wonderful statement of a modern space in keeping with the character of the space. The square-framed windows that look out onto the courtyard, are a traditional cottage feature. In the centre of the kitchen is a large wooden dining table where guests can enjoy a wonderful breakfast together or a warming meal cooked in the range oven. The kitchen also comes equipped with a full height fridge freezer and dishwasher.

Guests can truly make the most of the warm, summer evenings and dine alfresco. Located at the back of the property, the courtyard is a charming space filled with subtropical plants. There is a seating area, with table and chairs where guests could sit back and relax with a glass of wine after a day of exploring the Cornish coastline.

Accessed through a wonderful, wooden door under the stairs, guests will also find a handy WC and shower room. Ideal to quickly freshen up after a day spent at the beach.

Stepping back into the kitchen and heading up to the first floor of the property, guests will find the bright and spacious living area. The solid oak flooring is continued in this space and there are exposed dark wood beams. The light from the dual aspect windows is bounced around this space and the fresh white walls make this room a bright space within the daytime. Guests can relax on the sofas and armchairs and enjoy a cosy evening in watching a good movie or a game of chess on the tabletop board.

Captain Upton’s also has a truly one-off feature. Situated on the second floor, at the top of a small ladder is ‘the lookout’. A small seating area with views through a large ceiling window where guests can enjoy the ever-changing vista of Falmouth Harbour and listen to the wonderful sounds of the boats bobbing on the water.

There are two bedrooms and the main bathroom on the second floor. The master bedroom, with its wrought iron king-sized bed, guarantees guests a restful nights sleep. This room boasts a wonderful, wood panelled feature wall that provides texture and depth to the room. A gentle reminder of the nautical setting and theme of the property. There is a window overlooking the courtyard and a large ceiling window that each allow the morning light to gently creep in. It’s a wonderful room for guests to relax with a book and a morning coffee before the day begins. There is also a set of drawers in this room for luggage.

Adjacent to the master bedroom is the twin second bedroom. This room also has views out to the courtyard and exposed wooden beams offering character and charm. Both bedrooms provide the very best quality bed linen, so guests are truly comfortable.

At the top of the stairs is the stunning main bathroom. Fitted with a large overhead shower and modern fittings, this space has truly made the most of the renovations and is an inviting space to unwind at the end of the day with a long hot shower and heated towels.

Please note that because of the age of the house Captain Upton’s is not suitable for toddlers.

Captain Upton’s is set within the heart of Falmouth, hidden away down one of its many harbour passageways. There is so much to see and do in Falmouth and all within a short wander from the cottage doorstep. Explore the harbour town and its many boutique shops and galleries, stopping to sample a wonderful, traditional Cornish Pasty. Or take the kids to the Maritime museum and brush up knowledge of the history of the harbour and trade.

Falmouth has an amazing selection of restaurants where guests can be spoiled for choice on where to eat. The owners of the cottage have an agreement with the nearby, award-winning shellfish restaurant ‘The Wheelhouse’ who will deliver a wonderful meal to your door. So open a bottle of wine, get comfy and enjoy a delicious taste of the sea. Falmouth has amazing links to the surrounding fishing villages via water ferry. Guests can take a day trip to St Mawes or Flushing or hop on the train, from the town centre station and explore Truro.

There really is so much to see and do. And whether guests choose to explore Falmouth or be adventurous and take to the water on one of the many watersports offered at Gyllyngvase beach, a wonderful Cornish holiday is guaranteed!

Testimonials

What a fantastic week in Falmouth and staying at Captain Uptons made it perfect. The accommodation was exactly as described including thoughtful additions such as milk, bread, biscuits and lovely Cornish butter on arrival! The location is ideal for visiting local towns, such as Padstow, Newquay and the beautiful beach of Perranporth. But also there is so much to do within walking distance of the cottage in Falmouth with local bars, restaurants and shops and also the ferry from the harbour to the beautiful St Mawes which is well worth a visit. We had a fantastic time and would highly recommend the cottage and would definitely visit again.

The McGilley family

What a fabulous cottage, in an ideal location. The cottage had everything we could have asked for, it is beautifully furnished and has a wonderful, cosy feel to it. There is so much to do within walking distance, the shops and pubs/restaurants are literally round the corner and beaches within 10 minutes walk. As we were after a relaxing week, spending time at the cottage was just as nice as exploring the area; sitting in the garden to eat breakfast in the sunshine, curling up on the sofa in the bright living room to read a book when the rain came down. The bed is so comfortable too and overall we had a lovely week.

Mr & Mrs Pearce

Our stay at captain Upton’s was fantastic and would even go as far as saying perfect – it hit every requirement for all four of us!
We have a 17 year and a 20 year old (the 20 year old wasn’t going to come but reluctantly did) and has asked if we can book it up again next year, as a Parent this is amazing as we thought the days of the kids joining us were Disappearing.

I can only say if I had a holiday home I’d want it to that one, amazing showers, everything was as stated, even a washing machine which we didn’t see on the advert (very helpful) as we had beach items that we washed, the people that live around cottage we’re so nice and friendly,
After parking the car we were able to enjoy going out and having a drink without having to think about driving back to the cottage – everything you want from shops, bar, restaurants etc are on your doorstep. As far as I am concerned my holiday started when the car was parked up!

We ventured out a few days in the daytime to other parts of Cornwall then to return local to enjoy place around us.

Thank you for a brilliant week in Falmouth. The location of Captain Uptons was perfect. The accommodation was exactly as described including thoughtful additions such as the umbrellas (we had to use unfortunately!) and torches.

We are grateful to you for advising us to make an alternative selection and feel that the choice was the best! We were there to visit our sons degree show at Falmouth University and the house provided the perfect location for our celebration of his achievements. Thank you so much!

The Wiley Family

As well maintained and equipped property as you could expect. My wife and I have stayed in many rentals in various parts of the world and this could stand comparison with any. It’s located in quirky surroundings but in a very convenient and accessible place and despite its age has all mod cons. There was a designated parking spot at about five minutes away which we used for part of the time. A very convenient adjacent car park cost just under £30 for five days. Many drinking and eating facilities are a few minutes walk away and the town’s shops are similarly accessible. The town has several beaches on its periphery. Car parking is limited but they’re a walkable distance away for the most part. Falmouth is also a useful starting point for visiting South and West Cornwall’s scenic towns and villages, it’s often beautiful countryside and other attractions including some of its stunning gardens.
