Tucked inland from Cornwall’s Roseland coastline is the waterside village of Malpas, shrouded with leafy, low-hanging trees along the River Truro’s edge.
Downriver from its bigger neighbour Truro, Malpas is a peaceful place for maritime dreaming. Here, several rivers converge, so it’s no surprise that boat trips are popular and plentiful. From this spot you can reach the bustling town of Falmouth or the scenic Roseland area, in fact, some of the best views in the locale are enjoyed from the Fal River ferry. To get the ferryman’s attention you once had to ring a bell, but these days there’s a timetable. If you have time, stop off at gorgeous Trelissick Gardens, with its house, gardens, gallery, shop and café for a cream tea.
Tucked away as it is, Malpas has easy access on foot to Truro’s vibrant Cathedral city, or you can head inland where a long stomp across to Tresillian takes ramblers over stiles, through fields, and in and out of gates and hedges. En route, look out for the church of St Clement’s rare lychgate, as well as the Roman monument near the church entrance. After a long walk you’ll be in need of a refreshing drink, so bag a seat with an estuary view at the Heron Inn, where local ales are on the menu.
